Portrait Cellars

The front of the winery, some say the back

Welcome to Portrait Cellars

Eve Shaw Portrait Portrait Cellars is a small family Winery. Our red wines are grown exclusively at our 12 acre vineyard on Red Mountain near Benton City, Washington. We planted the vineyard in 1997 and call it "E & E Shaw Vineyards" for Ed and Eve Shaw. (We own it.) Our Riesling vineyard is in Prosser.

We're called "Portrait Cellars" because Eve is a portrait painter and we feature her portraits on our labels. The portraits are of family and friends, including our house label "Black Dog Red." The black dog portrait is of our winery dog, "Cabernet," aka "Cabbie." He is a quite large, docile Black Labrador whose job is to greet visitors at the door in the hope that they might have a cookie in their pockets. Should you ever like to see your portrait on a really good bottle of wine, talk to Eve.

Cab the dog We're open for major event weekends and by appointment which means you just pick up your phone and let us know how many people and what time. We don't charge a tasting fee. Feel free to feed the dog.

Wine Press Northwest

Congratulations on winning a Platinum in Wine Press Northwest's 11th annual Platinum Judging, in which we determine the best of the best in the Great Northwest.

This year, we judged 538 wines from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho. All the wines had won gold medals from any of about 30 competitions we track throughout North America. This was our largest competition yet, and our judges selected just 75 wines for Double Platinum and Platinum.

Below is the review of your wine as it appears in the Winter issue of Wine Press Northwest, which is reaching subscribers' homes and single-copy locations this week.

Feel free to use this on your website, in promotional materials, in emails to your customers and on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to appearing in the pages of Wine Press Northwest, the winning wines also are promoted in other ways. For example, we highlighted many of them in our weekly wine column, which now appears in 16 newspapers with a combined circulation of more than 400,000. We also will promote the list on our website, and we will create a downloadable version for our thousands of email, Facebook and Twitter readers.

Dan Radil - Greetings

Hello Eve

I'm writing to Eve on New Years Eve. This must be some kind of coincidence. More likely, it's the result of my tardiness in following up to our visit last month(!)

Everyone agreed that the visit with you and Ed was certainly the highlight of our trip. I've (finally) completed a post to my web site that summarizes our visits to your place last year, along with my thoughts. You can read about it on my web site at www.danthewineguy.com. I think you'll be pleased.

Alex and I would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Thank you again for making our visits so enjoyable and we'll look forward to seeing you again in 2011.

Cheers and hugs,
Dan (& Aex)

Anita Long - I am back to buy more wine!! Hurry, it's getting warm in Texas!

Hello Eve and Ed,

I was introduced to your wine by Rick Alghren. We love it and I sent some to my NY office for a Xmas gift and the response after drinking your Merlot was" It has ruined me for other Merlots...probably the best bottle of red I have ever had!"

How is that! I asked to be notified when you bottled your Cab Franc...is it ready?

I am also interested in getting more of the 2006 Cab and some of that Merlot~

Can you please send me an email as to what you have and the availability. We have a very short window left to ship out here in Texas!!

Or you can call! 817-416-7095...

We also have friends that are interested in buying...so hope to hear from you soon! -a

Dale Spurlock - Many Many Thanks

Hi Eve,

This is dale Spurlock. I drove a group of (6) people from Oregon to your winery yesterday and had one of the best experiences I have ever had in my 10+ years as a tour guide. How can I thank you and your family for such a great time. I must say, you are the best kept secret in Washington wine country. Please pass along my thanks to your family for making this year complete.

Rick and Kathleen

Eve and Ed, Thank you for the most wonderful time at your beautiful home and amazing wine! It was the highlight of our day. You both felt like family to us and I hope Rick and I will get to come out again someday. Cheers to you both, Rick and Kathleen Belli

Wine Press Northwest Rates Portrait Cellers Merlot Platinum

Portrait Cellars 2005 Merlot, Red Mountain, $32: This family operation on Washington's Red Mountain is owned and operated by Ed and Eve Shaw. Ed grows the grapes, and Eve creates the stunning artwork that adorns each bottle (and for which the winery is named). This superb Merlot opens with aromas of boysenberries, oak and a dusting of cocoa powder, followed by flavors of pomegranates, black cherries and bittersweet chocolate. It's a powerful wine that reflects its roots. Won gold at the Washington State Wine Competition. (125 cases, 14.9% alc.)
